Onion free Vegetarian stock

Posted by Thambili on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, In : Explore
Massel is now making their "Chicken-style" and "Beef-style" stock cubes onion and garlic free!
Of course these are also Gluten free and Vegan... but they have been for some time. This is a great boon for the "Sentient/Pure Vegetarians" out there (e.g. Jain and other asian vegetarians).

Superfoods

Posted by Thambili on Thursday, May 14, 2015, In : Health
Are you getting tired of all the newest "superfoods".
Every year, or even every few months there seems to be a "new" food available which will solve all our problems.
Here's a youtube webinar posted by Deakin University in Melbourne's Associate Professor Tim Crowe.

Superfoods and Supermyths

It's a really well thought out and well-researched presentation!

Sugar Free Cereal

Posted by Thambili on Thursday, November 6, 2014, In : Health
The other day I wandered up and down the cereal aisle at the local supermarket to search out a breakfast cereal that did not have either sugar or oil added to it. The healthiest cereal I could find still had honey added. I am certainly not impressed with the multitude of words now being used for what is essentially sugar - raw sugar, unrefined sugar, natural cane sugar, evaporated cane juice. That last one really annoyed me!

Of course you could be healthy and eat oats, porridge, muesli for bre...

Lasagne variations

Posted by Thambili on Friday, October 31, 2014, In : Food diary
A healthier variation of my lasagne recipe. This is the variation I make most often now. There are two layers of the "meat" sauce, which is made with a higher portion of veggies, and a little less soy protein (hydrated textured vegetable protein). I am still using some sanitarium brand soy sausage to give the meat sauce more texture, and in this version I have also used some sanitarium casserole mince. The veggies (carrot, zucchini) I grate, rather than chopping, which makes the process quic...

New Vegetables to try - Jicama

Posted by Thambili on Sunday, September 21, 2014, In : Explore
Jicama
Jicama (pronounced Hicama) is a root vegetable native to South America. It is also known as the mexican bean yam, and popular in Asia by many other names.

It has a mild sweet taste BUT it is low in calories, and high in fibre, potassium and vitamin C.

This root vegetable is next on my list of things to find at the asian grocery. I'll upload recipe ideas in the coming weeks, watch out for them on the vegetables page.

Egg-free desserts

Posted by Thambili on Monday, January 20, 2014, In : Desserts
Dessert is always about rich and sweet... it's often high in sugar and high in fat and therefore best eaten in small quantities.
For most vegetarians it's the best part of the menu at any restaurant, as we can eat almost all the sweets on offer :-)

But what if you can't eat egg?

When you cook and bake at home there are many ways to make your favourite desserts without egg. My favourite egg-replacement is besam (chickpea) flour. Use a tablespoon of flour mixed with a tablespoon of water as an eq...

Eat more vegetables and live longer - the latest research...

Posted by Thambili on Saturday, October 19, 2013, In : Health

A report in Sciencedaily.com has brought my attention to a recent study  published in the American Journal of Epidemiology by a European research group - the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). We all knew intuitively that eating fruit and veg was good for us!... but now some compelling scientific evidence!

This particular paper finds that 3 out of 100 deaths could be prevented if everyone ate an extra 200grams of vegetables. This is mainly because of a reduct...

Agedashi tofu - Japanese style Tofu

Posted by Thambili on Monday, October 14, 2013, In : How to
I love agedashi tofu! It is one of my favourite ways to eat tofu... If it wasn't for the deep-frying we could eat tofu this way much more often!
But how do they fry soft tofu??? without it falling apart!!!... well the secret... is to weight or press the tofu first.

Buy some fresh Japanese tofu from your local Asian grocery (you know the one... it says "Japanese Tofu" on it... comes in a white plastic tub with thin plastic over the top). Make sure the tofu is fresh - check the expiry date and ma...

Last night's dinner

Posted by Thambili on Friday, October 11, 2013, In : Food diary
So here is my first food diary entry -

Last night's dinner...
Red rice mixed with white basmati, a carrot salad and a potato and silverbeet curry.
Unfortunately the silverbeet leaves were a little too mature! Made them quite fibrous, and required a lot of munching! But on the positive side... that will do wonders for our fibre intake :-)
Note to self.... must remember to choose younger looking silverbeet leaves next time.
Both these are very simple dishes really...
The carrot salad was simply gra...

I've been so busy over the last year that I have completely neglected this site!

So ... time for a revamp!

So far I've changed the design... next will be new photos... more on healthy eating and healthy living.... and of course ... more recipes!!!

The google ads are going to be pushed aside... this could take a while to do.

The blog is going to include a food diary... to include ideas of what every day vegetarian food is like.

Anyway... just for now... here's a Kale mallum from the other day -

Omega 3

Posted by Thambili on Monday, January 16, 2012, In : Health
We all know that omega 3 is good for you... mainly to improve your cardiovascular health, but also with neurological benefits.

But how to get the same benefits from vegetarian/vegan sources??
Most studies are performed on fish oil supplements... so in theory we need to try and match this.
The best vegetarian/vegan source at present looks like oil from microalgae.

I've started to research this a little... so stay tuned for more information... and see my health information page for a list of websi...

Being Vegetarian in an omnivorous world

Posted by Thambili on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, In : Philosophy
You might think that it is difficult to have your food choices reduced... but really it just depends on how you look at it!

Most restaurants will have a couple of vegetarian options, well-hidden amongst a list of very meat-biased dishes. As a vegetarian, you end up trying all sorts of dishes that you wouldn't otherwise... simply because it's the only vegetarian dish on the menu. I doubt there are many vegetables I haven't tried! I am so used to this scenario, that I feel overwhelmed by the cho...

Why Vegetarian?

Posted by Thambili on Friday, December 30, 2011, In : Philosophy
I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for approximately half my life now... and I very rarely miss eating meat! In fact the only dishes I really miss, tend to be those that are attached to memories... so I often wonder if it is really the meat or the memory which I miss.

The main reason that I am vegetarian, is because I feel that we should not intentionally kill or harm other beings - humans or animals! I keep this in mind when I choose the foods that I purchase, and eat. I feel we should try to...

Exercise

Posted by Thambili on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, In : Health
Of course being healthy is not all about food!

I have started exercising again... that is... exercising on purpose to try and improve my fitness.

I've been following exercises from this website: http://www.bodyrock.tv/   --i've started with exercises from 2009.
Following this for 2 weeks now, and exercising every second day... that means about 20 minutes of exercise every second day. I'm already feeling fitter. I tried sprinting across our local oval the other day and found I was hardly puffed!...

More recipes

Posted by Thambili on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, In : website news
The website is progressing pretty well... I've posted a range of recipes from Asia, Italy and Mexico. It's pretty obvious what my background is though... just by the number of recipes in each section.

I suppose eventually there should only be one recipe on each page, and the main pages should only provide links to these recipe pages. For now I'll keep adding recipes section at a time and divide them up properly later.

Protein for Vegetarians

Posted by Thambili on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, In : Health
Protein is essential for growth, healing and every day bodily function. It is relatively easy to acquire your necessary protein requirements if you think of essential amino acids rather than protein.

Protein is made of amino acids. If you eat protein, the body breaks it down to amino acids first, and then rebuilds from these amino acids the proteins that you require.

What you do need to focus on are Essential Amino Acids. Essential amino acids are the amino acids which your body cannot make, a...

I wish I could thank the fellow shopper who suggested i try it when i was standing in the flour aisle trying to decide which brand to try!

 About me

I've been a vegetarian for over 19 years... so obviously I have eaten a lot of vegetarian meals.

I am a Buddhist, which for me is very much related to my choice of lifestyle.

Finally, I have a background in health.

It will probably become obvious from my posts and articles how I combine these 3 aspects of my life.
